GERM A100 First-year German I 3 crs.

Fundamental structure of the language is the focus of this course including the development of the four basic skills–comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing.

GERM A101 First-year German II 3 crs.

A continuation of German A100.

Prerequisite: GERM A100 or equivalent.

GERM A200 Second-year German I 3 crs.

Continued development of the four basic skills. Readings in German culture with class discussion in German.

Prerequisite: GERM A101 or equivalent.

GERM A201 Second-year German II 3 crs.

Same description as German A200.

Prerequisite: GERM A200 or equivalent.

GERM A300 Conversation and Composition I 3 crs.

Emphasis is made on oral and written expression, with vocabulary based on readings about everyday life in Germany. Included in the course is a review of contemporary idiomatic expressions, frequent written assignments, and oral presentations.

Prerequisite: GERM A201 or equivalent.

GERM A301 Conversation and Composition II 3 crs.

Same description as German A300.

Prerequisite: GERM A201 or equivalent.

GERM A312 Introduction to German Literature I 3 crs.

Representative works from each of the major genres are examined to introduce the student to the study of German literature.

Prerequisite: GERM A201 or equivalent.

GERM A313 Introduction to German Literature II 3 crs.

Same description as GERM A312.

Prerequisite: GERM A201 or equivalent.

GERM A320 German Culture and Civilization I 3 crs.

This course covers German history and culture from its beginning through the 18th century. Exercises in language skills are conducted in German.

Prerequisite: GERM A201 or equivalent.

GERM A321 German Culture and Civilization II 3 crs.

This course covers German history and culture from the end of the 18th century to the end of the 20th century. Exercises in language skills are conducted in German.

Prerequisite: GERM A201 or equivalent.

GERM A353 Romanticism and Realism 3 crs.

This course is a survey of German literature in the 19th century, including Kleist, Hoffmann, Heine, and Hauptmann.

Prerequisite: GERM A201 or equivalent.

GERM A354 Currents in 20th-century Germany 3 crs.

Hofmannsthal, Rilke, George, Mann, Kafka, Hesse, Brecht, and selected post-war works are discussed.

Prerequisite: GERM A201 or equivalent.

GERM A355 From Middle Ages to Baroque 3 crs.

This course is a survey of German literature from the great medieval epics to the deeply religious poets of the 17th century.

Prerequisite: GERM A201 or equivalent.

GERM A356 The Age of Goethe 3 crs.

This course is a survey of German literature from the Enlightenment to the mature classical works of Goethe and Schiller.

Prerequisite: GERM A201 or equivalent.

GERM A495 Special Project 1 cr.

Capstone course required of all seniors. Student will work independently on a research paper in conjunction with a regular advanced course, and under the supervision of a professor. Capstone work should reflect the skills and knowledge the student has acquired as a foreign language major.

GERM A496 Seminar/Workshop arr.

A seminar is a supervised group of students sharing the results of their research on a common topic. A workshop is a supervised group of students participating in a common effort.

GERM A497 Internship/ Practicum arr.

An internship is supervised practical experience. A practicum is supervised practical application of previously studied theory.

GERM A498 Senior Thesis arr.

GERM A499 Independent Study arr.
